Always had a passion for music but never had the chance to learn to play yourself? Now is the time! Whether you're 21 or 85 there are a number of benefits to learning an instrument.

1. Boosts your brain!

According to research, most activities only use a few areas of the brain whilst playing a musical instrument uses almost every part of the brain. Learning an instrument boosts memory retention, multitasking, making connections, and other mental activities. For more information about this check out our post about how music improves your memory and focus.

2. Get your muscles moving!

Growing older can come with its physical challenges, especially with fine motor skills. If you can work around the stiffness and the arthritis, you might just find that playing music is the best thing you can do to keep those fingers moving, or maybe even get them moving again.

3. It’s social!

Learning an instrument is a really easy way to make new connections or develop old ones. Music brings people together regardless of age, culture or background. Not sure where to start? On Hello Music World you can become a part of a global community of people with a strong interest in music.

4. Discover more about the world and yourself!

Learning music is a lot more than just playing the instrument. Having more technical knowledge of music gives you greater insight into music production. It also allows you to appreciate the time, effort, and even innovation put into your favourite songs. The journey even goes beyond the music itself. It can become an overflowing path of self-discovery and expose that you can do something you never thought you could.

5. A source of fun and stress-relief

The stress of adult life never really goes away but when you are playing music the outside world can wait. It allows you to drive away anxieties, put full focus and attention towards what you are doing and be in the moment. It’s a great opportunity to do something that you are passionate about and have a moment of fun.

Learning music as an adult can definitely have its added obstacles as you may not have a lot of time to practice and your brain is no longer developing as fast as it was when you were a child. Don’t give up, just keep at it. It will be worth it!
